Elk Grove Surf preparing for US Soccer youth age-group transition

Starting with the 2026/27 season, U.S. youth soccer organizations, including US Club Soccer, US Youth Soccer, AYSO, and NorCal Premier soccer, are moving from birth-year age groups to a school-year system with an August 1 – July 31 cutoff. This change is mandatory for all Elk Grove Surf ,competitive teams and NorCal Premier competitions.

Why the Change

The birth-year system launched in 2016, aimed to align with international standards but created challenges, including:

  • Separation from school classmates and teammates.
  • Lower retention, especially among younger players where social connections are key.
  • Difficulty transitioning from recreational soccer to competitive soccer among peers
  • "Trapped players" (often those born August–December) whose soccer age doesn't match their school grade, leading to mismatches during critical transitions—like 8th graders on mostly 9th-grade teams missing opportunities during high school seasons, or seniors without suitable peers in their final year.

The August 1 cutoff better aligns teams with school cohorts, reducing these issues and supporting healthier transitions, especially during middle and high school years. To learn more about the change, click here.

Expected Benefits

  • Stronger team cohesion by playing with school-grade peers
  • Better alignment of physical, social, and emotional development
  • Improved retention and long-term participation

What does this mean for Elk Grove Surf?

Elk Grove Surf fully supports this shift as it aligns with our mission of holistic player development in an inclusive, affordable environment. Team formation for Fall 2026 – Spring 2027 will follow the new structure, with individual consideration given to players impacted by the transition to ensure the best possible placement. (Note: For "trapped" players—such as those born in August who share a school grade with the older group—clubs often have some flexibility for tryouts or placement; we will evaluate these on an individual basis to support smooth transitions.)

Important Timeline Reminder

The transition takes effect during 2026/27 tryouts/registration in May for the Fall 2026/27 start, in line with the mandatory nationwide shift across U.S. youth soccer organizations.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we prepare for this change. We'll provide regular updates, including resources like official age group calculators from U.S. Soccer/US Club Soccer, FAQs, and support as we approach the transition.

Elk Grove Surf remains dedicated to creating the best possible environment for every player to thrive on and off the field. Thank you for being part of the Elk Grove Surf family.
